Travelling from Sibu to Mukah and vice versa by bus now costs just RM1 instead of the usual one-way fare of RM22.
The distance between the two Sarawak towns is 157km and the journey usually takes about two-and-a-half hours by road.
Mukah is famed for its Kaul Festival celebrated by the Melanau community to appease the spirits of the sea, land, forest and farm.
“The state government wants to promote local tourism so they are providing the fare subsidy,” said Sarawak Bus Transport Company Association adviser Lau Khing Seng.
He said three bus companies had been charging the new rate since Oct 1.
He urged those who plan to visit Mukah to seize the opportunity and go there by bus.
When asked how long this cheap fare would last, Lau said he was not sure.
