Politeknik Mukah Sarawak (PMU) is located in Mukah which is the central region of Sarawak. Being the 20th polytechnic in Malaysia, PMU is the third polytechnic in Borneo after Kuching Sarawak Polytechnic and Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic. The PMU campus is built on a 100-acre site and is equipped with modern infrastructure and the latest educational facilities.
PMU’s first operation began at Sekolah Menengah Teknik Sibu in 2004. The first student intake was in the July 2005 session with pilot courses such as Information Technology Certificate, Civil Engineering Certificate and Business Studies Certificate. Course offerings increased a year later where Diploma level courses were also offered by all five major academic departments. The five main academic departments are;
- Department of Information & Communication Technology (JTMK)
- Department of Civil Engineering (JKA)
- Department of Electrical Engineering (JKE)
- Department of Mechanical Engineering (JKM)
- Commerce Department (JP)
The offer of general modules/subjects, Science and Mathematics is offered by the Department of General Studies (JPA) and the Department of Mathematics, Science and Computers (JMSK).
In addition to full-time courses, PMU also offers short-term courses open to the public and local communities under the Time Sector Privatization (TSP) program. This program promotes lifelong learning among the local community. Through such a program, it is hoped that the establishment of PMU in Mukah can help the local community improve knowledge, skills, competence or obtain new knowledge/skills.
